Born on 13 December 1863, Arthur Slade Baker was educated at Bedford School. He received his first commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery in 1882, was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1889, to the rank of Captain in 1891, and to the rank of Major in 1900.〔https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/25998/page/6928/data.pdf〕〔https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/26210/page/5220/data.pdf〕 He served during the Second Boer War, between 1900 and 1901, was appointed as Inspector of the Army Ordinance Department, between 1901 and 1905, and as Deputy Assistant Director at the War Office, between 1908 and 1912. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1912.
